Reddit Craziness

A few days ago I did an AMA (Ask Me Anything) on the Reddit forum Forever Alone Improvement. Redditor shakedown_st submitted one of my responses from that AMA to the BestOf forum, and things kind of went a little crazy from there. The post got a lot of feedback, ended up in the top of BestOf, then on Reddit’s front page. More craziness ensued. This little blog has received over 34,000 hits in the last 2 days, and many people have sent messages with comments and questions.

My goal for today is post the answers from the AMA here, and to respond to as many messages as I can. Thanks for visiting and sharing your own stories. It might take me some time, but I’ll try to read everything from the comments. Here’s something I learned from this experience: A shitload of people have social anxiety. If you’re one of those people, you’re not alone, by far.

Men: You know what’s hot? When guys wear long-sleeved shirts (button-ups, sweaters, etc) and they push up/roll up the sleeves so their forearms show. Hot. Some other women I’ve told this to feel the same way. Weird but true.

Women: Are you trying to train your hair/bangs/fringe to part a certain way (left or right)? Part it in the shower when your hair’s all wet, right before you get out. It makes the hair stay in that direction so much easier because the water weighs it down and kinda sets your hair in that position.

Random: Yesterday I was listening to the radio in the car, on my way to a high school to pick up one of the kids I mentor. This song comes on that is pretty interesting, like a mix between Journey and Kings of Leon. I SoundHound it on my phone and it’s something called “It’s Time” by Imagine Dragons. The song ends, and I’m a little sad because I was really enjoying it. Then some crap music comes on, and I’m channel flipping, flipping, flipping. I find “Name” by the Goo Goo Dolls which is almost over, but whatever. It’s still a good song. I listen to it, it ends, then a new song comes on. It’s the Imagine Dragons song again. So. Awesome. I roll up to the high school and my kid gets into the car just as the song ends, and we have a fantastic meeting (and not just because I’m in a good mood because of the song). The end.

Pacing, kids on planes, Google Adsense, etc.

(OkCupid original post date: 6/3/12)

Have you ever had so much to do that you just end up doing nothing? I’m in a hotel room in South Carolina with all these things running through my mind that I should be doing, but all I’ve been able to do for the last 15 minutes is pace around the room, walking from the door to the balcony and back.

Yesterday I had to leave for the airport at 5am, and since I veer towards nocturnalism anyway, decided to just stay up instead of sleeping for a few crappy hours. Figured I could sleep on the plane later. Then while waiting in the security line at SFO, I started getting a flourish of ideas for “Nice Guy” posts about sexual tension, confidence, and physical appearance. I scribble these down on a notepad while kicking my luggage forwards in the line so it doesn’t get left behind. Then I get on the plane, and see about 6 strollers folded up and waiting to be loaded on. I’m thinking, fuck, I’m never going to be able to sleep on this flight. I find my seat. There are two twin boys who are about 2 years old sitting in front of me, and a girl who’s about 3-4 sitting behind me. Shit, right?

The Kindness of Strangers

Hi Redditors. I’m coming to visit you soon. Thank you for reading the posts.

(OkCupid original post date: 5/29/12)

You know what I love about this world? The people in it. Yes. It’s time to stop reading this now if you’re a misanthrope. In the last 24 hours, I’ve been trying to make a website. Not a WordPress blog, an actual purchased domain thing. I’ve been getting quite a bit of traffic on my blog [almost 13,000 hits], and I have a few more months before grad school starts, so I figured it wouldn’t hurt to try and turn this into a kind of part-time job. I had no idea where to start. I googled a few things, bought a month of hosting time, then I was stuck. I used the ‘live chat’ function on the hosting website, then started chatting with “Noel D”. My style of chatting could be construed as “annoying” where I think of something then hit send. If you’ve read any of my writing, it’s very similar. Stream of consciousness type thing, like so:

Classrooms and Mayonnaise

I know it’s been a while since I’ve posted anything of substance. I have about 5 posts that I’m currently working on which are all between 20%-80% done, but then I get distracted before finishing them and start writing a new one. I read books the same way; there are probably about 6 books that I’ve started and haven’t finished, including Harry Potter 5 which I’ve been reading on and off for over 2 years now (not because it’s not good, it is. I just get.. distracted.) I’m hoping to finish a bunch of posts by this week and not leave them hanging and half-finished for as long as 2 years. In the meantime, here’s another random post from OkCupid.

Some people like to go to libraries to do work. Some people like coffee shops. I like empty classrooms. You can turn up your music, stay as long as you want, and bring your own food/drinks. The only problem with classrooms is *because* you have all these freedoms, distractions can happen, especially if there’s chalk around. Yesterday was one of those days.

Also, when I was in SC, I ordered a BLT sandwich and they gave me ketchup and mayonnaise in these cute little bottles. Wasteful, but cute nevertheless.

I tried the fries in mayo thing. It’s a European thing, right? I couldn’t get with it. Way too rich tasting.

Candy. A Shitload of Candy.

(OkCupid original post date: 6/11/12)

I am both impressed by the organization of this aisle and also nauseated by how much candy there is.

Also, this:
